Curing the glitches... one patch at a time.

Anyone who has played Left 4 Dead on Xbox 360 has no doubt at least seen or participated in one of the many glitches, tricks, or exploits that were rampant throughout the game to give your team, or the Survivors an edge. Well, hopefully you used them while you could; those of you who played Left 4 Dead and connected to Xbox Live yesterday were prompted to download a mandatory update for the game. Fixing almost every exploit there was, and making a slew of other changes, the update implemented the following fixes:

General changes
- Fixed Survivors being able to climb surfaces marked for versus infected only.
- Fixed a class of SurvivorBot bugs dealing with rescuing downed players.
- Players can no longer grab ladders while flying through the air after a Tank punch.
- Shooting near a car with an alarm that has already fired the alarm will no longer make chirping noises.
- Improved loading time.
- Fixed mini-gun physics exploit.
- Fixed propane tanks (and other physics objects) causing players to fall through elevators.
- Fixed rare achievement bug issues.
- Fixed several map exploits.
- Fixed various match making issues.
- Fixed NAT traversal issues.

Versus Changes
- Added HUD elements to show status of other infected players.
- Changed color of infected player name in chat to red.
- Fixed exploit where players could spawn infected bots
- Fixed instance where a Survivor changing to the infected team would be attacked by infected bots.
- Normalized special infected melee damage.
- Made the following client commands cheat protected: "Kill" and "explode".
- Fixed exploit where infected players could run away and teleport back to gain health.
- Players can only change teams once per map.
- Players can't change teams while other players are still loading.
- Tank spawns at the same % through the map for both teams in versus mode.
- Made the Tank and Witch spawn directly on the escape route.
- Increased chance of getting the Tank or Witch.
- Fixed team swap issue.

Hunter changes
- Easier to pounce a Survivor who is meleeing.
- Increased Minimum damage a Hunter pounce does.

Smoker changes
- Fixed Smoker tongue tolerance.
- Smoker now has to be killed or the tongue destroyed for the tongue to break.
- Survivor's cannot bash someone off the tongue until the Survivor being pulled is paralyzed or hanging
- Tongue attacks that fail to paralyze or hang a Survivor will use the shorter ability delay timer.
- Fixed cases where the ability timer was not using the correct time.
- Fixed case where you could point at a Survivor but not register a tongue hit
- Fixed Smoker tongue not targeting and landing properly through PZ ghosts.
- Smoker tongue does damage every second while dragging paralyzed Survivors.

Tank changes
- Bashable objects now appear with a red glow.
- Tanks hitting a car with an alarm disables the alarm permanently.
- Tank frustration timer is only reset by hitting Survivors with rocks or fists.
- Reduced autoshotgun damage against Tanks.

Witch changes
- Witch spawns at the same % through the map for both teams.
- Avoids spawning within a certain % of the tank.
- Fixed an exploit where the Witch could be woken up and tricked into attacking Survivors.

Phew. That's one hell of an update. Reading it tells me a number of things, one being that using exploits and glitches obviously became a major part of playing the game. But why?

Seems to me the biggest reason is because of L4D's unpredictable gameplay and chaotic enemy encounters. Even with tightly knit teams with good communication, victory or survival is not garaunteed. There are almost no campaigns where a sure-fire strategy works every time. That unknown element is what drove people to find other means of survival, often outside the parameters of what the developers intended. Even without playing the game, just going to YouTube and typing in "Left 4 Dead" turns up a bunch of exploit strategies. It's stuff that makes you think, "How in the hell did anyone ever discover that?"

Last night, upon starting up the game I hopped into a few versus matches and followed those up with a co-op campaign. Before I even started noticing the update changes, my fellow teammates (and the other team as well, as I found out) were complaining about fixed exploits, regardless of them hindering our team's progress. While I'm sure the few players I came across in my few games do not represent consensus of Xbox Live gamers, I was surprised today to find all my co-workers at my other job were disappointed as well. This raises a red flag for me.

I'm just wondering, did you guys think that Valve wasn't watching too?

And have we become so spoiled by modern games that when a difficult one is released we resort to radical and irrational tactics to obtain a victory, or a few Achievements? Perhaps they don't remember when games didn't have checkpoints, or save-anywhere features. Or when games didn't let you save at all. Perhaps they don't remember when there weren't any strategy guides, or no Internet, let alone online FAQs or YouTube videos. To those of you complaining out there, just man up. Be thankful that a company like Valve is so in tune with their games and their relationship with the gaming community, and that they care enough to bring us patches and free content enhancing the gameplay and gamers' experiences.

Hahah pricless its amuses me as us PC gamers was like hah fixed no more shit heads to kick from our rooms yet 360 goes up in flames about how they can't cheat, and with a good team of surivors victory is always possible without fail, this patch has been released on pc ages ago I welcomed the changes next on the list I see smokers smoke doing aoe damege and smoker lock on being improved as right now on pc its like a nats hair off you miss, so that needs a good fix, other than that this game is excellent.

Just y'know.... play it the way it was planned and programmed to be enjoyed.
Its made by Valve, in my opinion one of the very best companies out there. Top of their field. Theres not one game they've released that isn't brilliant.

Ie; Halflife
Multi award winning game. Thus came scripted sequences! giving an edge to our Fps gaming.

I don't get all this exploiting, to go around a level and nitpick every little thing, thats just bewildering.

But hey, thats my view.


Is awarded 2500 points and one smite anybody in the xbox thread god card! xD

Yeah totally agree with you there, makes me laugh when you watch some of the glitch videos for COD4 and WAW on Youtube. It's like do these glitch finders have no life??? Shocked

I used to use the glitch in Cod4 on crossfire in private matches. It was funny to keep sniping my mate from outside the map if only to listen to him bitch constantly!
But in actual online play I wouldnt use it as its cheating and I cant stand cheats. Whether its in a game or actual life. Its just proof they are failures, who would rather cut the corner than work at something to improve

Ah, glitches....

During a versus game on L4D with Blister we played the infected on the Sewer level of No Mercy.

The opposing team spent half a bloody hour trying to bash down the metal shutter before the horde battle. Myself, Blister and the others managed to take them down with no hassle due to their pricking about trying to get a glitch to work which had obviously been taken away.

Didn't do alot for their score either and they left shortly after thus ending the game (Which always pisses me off)

So not alot of people on the 360 are aware that these patches actually take away the "Perks" they try to use...
